My journey from December 2013 to present-
Intriguing
Today, I make a decision to start my blog again. This
website, jennlee.eu has been loitering around in cyberspace for a couple of years and now it is the time to
bring it back to life.
Since December 2013, things have been exciting. I had the
opportunity to study with Colleena Shakti at the Indian Fusion Belly Dance Retreat in Bali, and it was an
exhilarating experience. I have been brought back to the world of Classical Indian Dance. You see, being
brought up in a multi racial society, living and studying with classmates from another ethnic group hadn’t
prompted me to find out more. Put it this way, I didn’t feel the need to, they were one of us, we played,
study and work together. I did realised that Classical Indian Dance was very much part of their culture, in
fact most of my classmates were trained in some form of classical dance since young. What would I call
this....taking things for granted!
It’s different now. I wish I had paid more attention. I only
realised that I want to know more, more about their dance, the mudras and what it meant. I loved the story
telling in their dance. Although this is not the only dance form that expresses the way of life, their love
for the Gods, love for nature, it had brought me into a whole new world of lyrical dance. I attended a Tahiti dance class whilst in Asia and they did the same. Their
dance tells stories of the wind; trees and about life and I think it’s so expressive, beautiful and
meaningful.
When we dance, we express our emotions; we bring the
emotions of the music to life, we dance to joy, happiness or sadness. As we immersed ourselves in dance, our
emotions flow into it and it shows in our face and in our moves. Our audience feel our emotions and
understand our joy or sadness. That to me is the pinnacle of dance and that’s something I aim to achieve in
my dance.
